    I think one of the most oppressive things is passive resource generation. The more you get hit the more chance you get to two touch your opponent. If they scale burst and meter gen according to HP% it would be an instant nerf to heavyweights.

    You’re looking at this backwards. The roles are the three things you can possibly do. You can either be doing damage, preventing the opponent from doing damage, or provide some utility to help accomplish those two other things. To add another role you would have to add something to do that is neither offense or defense which means it would be neutral and you would be doing nothing. Instead think of unique ways to accomplish those roles. Like the RTS mechanics, in natural selection that functions as an incredibly powerful and complex support class. Or create scenarios in which different forms of them work better (vary between aoe and pinpoint damage, create opportunities to switch between for heavy defense lean and fast defense)

    the first thing to mention when talking about strive balance is always the fact that there are very few low tiers and most of the cast is between top and mid tier and even then the "low tiers" are doing relatively alright

    I think the fourth class can only exist if you split up support. Support should be split into healer and the fourth class can be more like buffs/debuffs/shields/displacements/teleports/unique attacks/etc. I guess if I had to name them then "healer" and "support". Offense and defense are just too specific to split up and it doesn't make sense to do so, anything derived off them is just a sub-class. I feel like healer/support can be split up more than the other two so it's the best way to approach it. Having one heal and another support as in support in other methods sounds right. Just my thoughts.

    Honestly, companies are missing out on potential improvements by betting their all on one type of gameplay and balance. If they experimented like that and added these new possibilities as separate gamemodes you could chose, they could see what players like risk free.

    I think something like a "tactician" might work. He has less offense, defense and heal than others, but maybe he has unique only to him info at all times. Also, what if only tactician can talk with other teammates at all times? And others only have proximity chat with one another. What if he can see everyone's HP and ability cooldowns? And only he can see where others are on the map while others only see themselves?

    Guild Wars 1 GvG Flag Runner. They mainly focus on running the flag and hindering the opponents flag runner. They can also support or help with damage spikes, but those are just secondary tasks. Their main purpose is to make sure, that their teams' flag is raised in the center of the map.

    Subclasses (in my opinion): Support - Healing, Buffing Defence - Protecting, Blocking Offence - Damage, Scouts Healing heals, buffing buffs. Max health versus current health sort of thing. Protecting sits in the front line soaking up damage, blocking sets up turrets or walls to block players from getting somewhere. Damage deals damage, scouts are recon.

    the reason there wont be a 4th class is because there can only be 3 classes, imagine a game structured around typical offense vs defense but instead of that third support completing the love triangle its movement or recon, when you cant be healed youre more inclined to use your brain and actually want to fight while under an advantage, for example instead of running brainlessly into a site you either drone or use some speed buff to give yourself the advantage before engaging, the 3rd class is a glue to whatever type of game youre playing and is usually the identity of the game with the other classes spinkled within some characters, in r6 its offense defense and recon, in apex its offense defense and movement, in fortnite its none but the items are usually offense defense and movement, in cod its offense defense and recon surprisingly, instead of asking whats the 4th class ask how many triangles can we make and which are most common

    I think the best example I've ever seen proposed is the "General" class. Basically a single player on each team who watches what their team is doing in a bird's eye view while still engaging in it by coordinating their team to attack or hold specific areas, providing air offence or supplying the soldiers with drops of healing and ammo, but the meds/bullets can *only* be used by the healers or damage dealers, leaving their roles untouched. Basically, the 4th class is not too dissimilar to a Game/Dungeon Master. Someone who not only has a unique playstyle but is playing a different game entirely, and treats the other players as pawns in chess. The only problem is good luck getting players to listen and work together to that degree.

    I'd argue Assassin counts as a core class as it is completely isolated from the main 3 and focuses on punishing those who are isolated ig. You can't reliably rely on support to heal, tanks for shields, or offense for cover fire it's just you and the back line. Reaper, Spiderman, and widowmaker come to mind.

    The Strategist class. They see the map from above and issue orders for the team to follow like a strategy game. They can construct buildings like bunkers, gun emplacements and factories/airfields to make vehicles for the other players to use. Maybe they decide what classes other player spawn as?(Recruitment) They could also have some of the most powerful ultimates, like calling in an orbital bombardment, which is only unlocked after the ground units fulfill certain conditions. This probably wouldn't work for anything but an arma or planetside-esque game

    Feels intresting that you say engineers are under the tank catagory - with kits like turrets and deployables, I think more often they fall under support through utility rather than diverting attention

    Dude, what is this Darkest Dungeon gameplay? Did you get it from 2014 early access? Bro, the game is almost 10 years old since full release and got 5 dlcs in total much before quarantine started. You could've show some more recent gameplay, not a prehistory.

    I'd quite frankly say that recon abilities fall under support - instead of supporting the team with health or ammo or what have you, you're supporting the team with intel. it can certainly be a very specialized form of support, but it seems to me more like a very well-defined subclass than a fourth class.

    So imagine an fps with an rts aspect to it. (Like there's 3 heroes on the field, but the rts player is controlling the whole army), now you have 3 roles: offense, defense, support and strategist :D

    "Support" is way too vague. You could argue that a Tank is "Support". I think that we mislabel things. Healing really isnt the same as setting traps. You could also argue that providing info is STILL supporting your team. "Support" isnt a class, it's an "anything else" bucket

    Idk I feel like its overcomplicated. You got Tank & Damage Dealer & Healer & Controller. Controller tends to get sprinkled into the other roles often but some games give chances to seperate it. Xcom 2 specialist can be trained as a healer OR as a hacking/anti-robot troop. Baldur's gate 3 & Divinity have controller classes that don't do much healing or dmg can focus on buffs/debuffs to combo with your team.

    Back in the days, Control and Support were counted as their own thing, there was a 4rt class all along. In this video "control" is placed as a defense sub-class but a "support" character focusing on debuffs and terrain effects would also fall into control, since you're hindering the opponent while placing yourself in a better position. In exploration games a scout/thief who open paths other characters can't reach or disarm traps (or place some for the opponent to take another path) is also a form of terrain control. So while it would make sense to have it seen as a support sub-class nowdays, it's still its own thing.

    Technical. Some dmg and support characters with more advanced kits that focus more on setting up environmental skills. Stuff like traps or barriers. Something like an engineer, a junkrat, symettra. Where their kits are focused on deployables rather than their own guns. They focus more on setting stuff up rather than doing direct damage. Kind of like a halfway between damage and support. With damage and support dealing with characters directly affecting others, A technical character would focus on using their brains and gear to change/affect their environment. It wouldn't work on all games but could be a gimmick role. They wouldn't be specifically a damage character or a healer, they set shit up on the battlefield to either distract their opponents or give their teammates the upper hand
